… permission to watch Zeus be fed
Please indulge me; I just had to post this permission form that was sent home in Rosie’s school folder.
Dear Parents,
We will be feeding Zeus, our ball python, three mice every couple of weeks.
This can be a little gruesome because when he catches one of the mice, he squeezes them to their death and then swallows them whole. When he swallows them their fur gets all wet and their eyes sometimes bulge. Therefore, we are requesting parent permission for your child to be able to watch Zeus be fed.I give my child, ______________, permission to watch Zeus be fed.

That’s pretty neat. Did you sign the form and send it back?

It’s part of the cycle of life (and death), I often wonder how differently we, as a society, would behave if death wasn’t kept from us so much in our early lives. I suspect we’d have more respect for life. I think it’s great that the kids get at least a look at it in other species.

oh man, this brings back memories of 7th grade where we had a boa constrictor in my science teacher’s class room. this one time, this other kid took it out and put it around my neck. sounds like a recipe for distaster already, right? so, as boas are known to do, the thing starts to tighten up around me. Luckly the other kid was just about the strongest kid in school, and the snake wasn’t terribly big (3 feet, 5 lbs or so), so he was able to pull it off of me. then the teacher, Mr. Henderson walks in and says “hey, stay away from that. it’s shedding.” so, to sum up, I’m thinking “look, but don’t touch” in this python situation of yours.

Remember that illustration in The Little Prince of the snake with the eaten elephant inside it?

Actually, what concerned me was the rate of feeding - we only feed our boa (Arnold Snakesenegger) one rat every two or three months. Feed them much faster than that, and they can go into hypergrowth.

I agree with the comment about “real life.” If your daughter (and I have a 7-year-old) wants to watch it, she can: If she doesn’t, she can turn away (screaming the appropriate sound :o). I watched this happen in the Bangkok Zoo once and found watching the death of a sentient being, alas, both abhorrent and captivating.

too cool…more classes need to do that sort of thing. I say sign it.
