Lenten follow-up

Filed under: Joan @ 8:24 am

So, I wasn’t able to give up alcohol for Lent (maybe next year, when Lizzie’s in Kindergarten … there’s that phrase again … it’s beginning to sound like “when the iceman cometh” - do people still read that play?). Instead, I gave up talking on the cell phone when my kids are in the car. Good thing, too, in light of what just happened at our local coffee joint:

car crash - Open Eye

Apparently, the driver was on her cell phone and even after jumping the curb, smashing bricks, crashing through the window and into “Carrboro’s livingroom,” she was still had that phone glued to her ear … waving people off who came to her aid (mouthing, “I’m on the phone”?).

Or, as my doctor-friend who tried to help her said, “that fucking phone.”

  1. There must be something about coffee joints frequented by runners. The same thing happened to us out here in Seattle a few years back: a car smashed through the front wall of the Alki Bakery, which is at Alki Point in West Seattle, where our running club would meet; although I’m not sure if a cell phone was involved. If you visit the town (and come join us for a run), they have rebuilt; they still have good scones and now there are framed pictures on the wall of the car smashed through all the way to the front counter. Run well. Yrs, E

  2. Are you kidding me? Was anyone hurt besides the idiot driving? Even if that was my Mom I would call her an idiot. Driving and Cell phones dont mix, its getting worse too. Anyway hope everyone is ok.

  3. The coffee shop owner is a true entrepreneur! Given the attention from the police, local media, paparazzi, and runners, I see a table and chair was set up in the front for the barista to make and deliver $8 drinks. A Starbuck’s contract is in the mail.
