They sought guidance neither from tradition, nor from transcendent spiritual sources, nor from families, but from other people." I would add that they seek guidance from the media more than anything else. Don't you know people - many people, actually - who decide what do, where to go, what to wear, to drive, to eat, to think, based on some slick magazine or TV ad. or other<strong> created </strong>perception of <em>the good life</em>? The only truly good life is created from within, not without. Charlie,

The idea that struck me is that the 50s were the decade in which we lost our inner direction (as a society) because people no longer needed to stick with their home and family and church - we could be independently prosperous. The prosperity - allowing many of us to live the "six-figure five-bedroom rootless lifestyle" - means that we start looking for our direction as a result of other's affection - others who are not from the place we are from, and thus they aren't rooted in the same set of values. And we get really confused.
